Positive thinking and the Placebo Effect

Laugh Often organic tank topLast month, the Boston Globe published an article about the power of placebo drugs and the ethical dilemma they pose. If placeboes help some people, why not just prescribe them? The dilemma is that the patient must believe he is getting real treatment for the placebo to work. The doctor is lying if he doesn’t tell the patient he’s taking a sugar pill every day, but if he does tell him the placebo won’t work.

But how do they work? The power of the placebo is hope. The patient’s hope that his illness will get better makes the mind, and in tandem the body, believe the treatment is working. This is a great example of the power of positive thinking. You attract more positive people and situations when you actively keep your mood and thoughts positive. In turn, they reinforce your outlook on life. One simple way to stay positive, and share your inspiration with others, is wearing an inspirational message shirt.
